A head on collision claimed the life of one person while leaving two others seriously injured early Sunday morning. The crash occurred on Interstate 95 approximately half a mile south of the New Rochelle toll plaza at 4:30 a.m.

Driving north on the southbound side, Tanisha Gomez of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania collided with a Nissan sedan occupied by two men from New Jersey. The crash injured the driver of the 2005 Nissan resulting in a broken leg and non life threatening injuries. The passenger in the Nissan was killed as a result of the impact.

As reported by LoHud.com, New York City police were first notified of a driver heading the wrong way approximately two minutes before the crash occurred. Calls from other drivers who had spotted a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction prompted police response but not in enough time to prevent the collision.

The occupants of the Nissan were returning home to New Jersey after visiting friends in Connecticut. First responders at the scene of the accident had to employ the use of special equipment to remove the occupants of the Nissan. A tow truck driver at the scene said, "Their bodies were really twisted up". He also noted the female driver of the wrong way vehicle was screaming as she was loaded into the ambulance by emergency crews.

Both drivers were taken to the Bronx where the female driver underwent emergency surgery to address internal injuries. Expected to survive, the female driver was unable to provide any details regarding the accident. It is expected that blood samples will be taken to help investigators determine if the female driver was under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

HBO is airing a new documentary about a similar incident which occurred almost two years to the day of this accident. Another wrong way collision which resulted in the deaths of eight people in July of 2009.
