A second New York City family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the wake of the Christmas blizzard that struck the city two months ago. In both cases, the families are suing the city of New York for the unacceptably slow response to emergency 911 calls during the winter storm.
In the first wrongful death lawsuit, a Brooklyn family is suing New York’s sanitation, transportation, fire, and police departments for their 1.5-hour response time regarding a 911 call about chest pains. According to the New York Post, 63-year-old Claire Reed was suffering from chest pains on December 27 and thought she was having a heart attack. Her husband, Robert David, and her daughter, Chrystal Reed, said that a 90-minute response to a life-or-death situation was absurd, and that Claire might be with them today if not for the city’s poor weather response.
In the second blizzard-related wrongful death lawsuit, the daughter of an elderly Queens woman who died during the storm is suing New York City for $20 million. During the blizzard, Laura Freeman repeatedly tried to call 911 during the blizzard to get medical assistance for her 75-year-old mother, Yvonne Freeman. For three hours she struggled to even get a response from a 911 operator. In the last minutes, desperate for help, Laura Freeman even ran outside to ask for help from passing strangers. By the time help arrived, her mother had passed away.
These two wrongful death lawsuits are expected to be the first of several involving the city’s poor response to the December blizzard.
