A five year old boy from Spring Valley remains in critical condition after being shocked by a live wire that fell during Tropical Storm Irene. The same wire that injured the boy also was responsible for killing a 50 year old man.
The man, 50 year old David M. Reichenberg, was working to assist 5 year old Reuven Herbst when he was killed by the electric shock not far from his home. He leaves behind a wife and four children. Reichenberg was also assisted in the rescue attempt by the boy's father, Yehuda Herbst, who received burns from the live wire. Herbst was treated and released at Good Samaritan hospital.
The boy touched the lie wire and now the Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc company is being criticized for its lack of response to the situation when the wire went down. Police had contacted the utility company but they were reportedly slow about getting the power to the wire shut off. The company released a statement saying they were still investigating the situation.
Reichenberg is being acknowledged as a hero for trying to save the child. It is believed that he was killed when he touched the boy who was being burned by the electrical current in the live wire.
Police investigations are still underway in the Tropical Storm Irene-related incident.
