Tow Truck Driver Assisting Motorist Killed in Truck Accident on NY Thruway

Posted on Nov 22, 2011

While loading and strapping a disabled car onto his tow truck on Sunday, November 20th, Todd Young was hit by a tractor trailer and killed on the NYS Thruway near Exit 34A in Manlius. Mr. Young owned the Northern Light Auto Service towing company from Mattydale, NY. The driver of the tractor trailer was ticketed for moving from a lane unsafely.

The current New York “Move Over” law requires drivers slow down and move over when emergency vehicles are in the area or parked on the side of the road. Starting in 2012, the law will also require drivers move for hazard vehicles, like tow trucks.

Young's family reported that he was meticulous about safety while on the job. He wore a vest so he would be seen at night, ran the lights on his tow truck and was always fast when he had to be outside near the road. Even when the tow truck drivers use care and safety precautions, accidents happen. The family urges all drivers to use common sense and move over when you see emergency vehicles or tow trucks or any car on the side of the road – with or without a law that requires it.
