Harrison police directed traffic following an incident which occurred on I-95 involving a car on fire along the roadway. As the fire burned, approximately 15-20 bystanders gathers nearby to observe the accident which resulted in no injuries or loss of life.
According to Harrison.patch.com, "The four-door vehicle caught fire while being transported on the back of a flat-bed truck on the north-bound side of Interstate 95. The driver of the flatbed noticed the fire and dumped the burning vehicle on the shoulder a little before 1:30 p.m., fire authorities say. The driver pulled forward a safe distance while waiting for fire trucks to arrive."
Harrison Fire Chief commented that the driver of the flatbed did the right thing in "dumping" the car and moving out of the way. This action prevented two other vehicles which were also in transport from catching fire.
The fire which burned the vehicle beyond recognition was unoccupied and did not cause any injuries to firefighters or any other persons at the scene. Traffic however was backed up for over an hour while the blaze was brought under control. When it was all said and done, the make and model of the vehicle was unidentifiable.
At the time of the report, the cause of the fire remained under investigation with electrical problems being among the many possibilities which started the fire. What many consider a freak accident, the possibility of injury or death was avoided by the quick thinking of the driver transporting the vehicle. In addition, damage to other vehicles including the two other vehicles in transport was avoided by unloading the burning car along the roadway. Despite avoiding additional damage or injury to bystanders, the incident caused significant traffic backups until all lanes were re-opened an hour later.
