A former model has successfully sued a prominent Manhattan psychiatrist for $650,000 for medical malpractice. During the jury trial, the woman said that her doctor took advantage of her delicate mental state to set her up with his other patients, listen to tales of her sexual romps with them, and even get her to solicit money for his pet charity projects.
According to the Associated Press and the New York Post, Finele Carpenter, the famed Jordasche jeans model from the late seventies, began to see 68-year-old Allan Collins for regular therapy sessions in 2000. The woman was going through a tough divorce and working through the mental anguish of years of sexual abuse and a rape in her 20s.
Over the next five years, Collins, who is a famed psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital and who is often listed among New York’s best doctors, set up Carpenter with a number of his patients and would urge her to tell him about her sexual experiences with these men. He would also talk to the male patients about their experiences with her in bed in an inappropriate manner. Many of these patients were unhappily married at the time that Collins recommended them to Carpenter.
Collins denied that any of his therapy sessions or behavior was inappropriate, but the jury disagreed that he had acted in an unethical manner. They awarded the former model with $650,000: $250,000 for the cost of her therapy session over the last five years and $400,00 for emotional pain and suffering.
