The Mahopac and Carmel New York communities are still in shock over last week's Murder/Suicide tragedy of two family men. A Carmel Highway Department Mechanic, Michael Boccardi, killed his co-worker, Michael Purdy, and then took his own life. Purdy had just returned from having dinner with Boccardi's estranged wife.
Leading up to the murder/suicide, people close to Boccardi said they could tell something was wrong. The Carmel police Chief, Michael Johnson said Boccardi seemed down, and that he had lost a lot of weight but when he asked Boccardi if everything was alright, Boccardi had replied that he just had some problems he needed to work out.
Boccardi was described by the Carmel Supervisor, Ken Schmitt, as a gentleman. Purdy was president of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, was once a youth sports coach, ran the holiday tree-trimming operations, and worked on his friends' cars in his free time. Both men worked for the same employer, but they didn't spend much time together on the job – but they graduated from the same high school and were described by others as close friends. Both men were separated from their wives, and each fathered four children.
Boccardi's estranged wife, MaryAnn Boccardi, shared dinner with Michael Purdy on Wednesday night. When she dropped Purdy off at his home, Boccardi came out of hiding from the bushes and shot Purdy in the head. He got into the passenger side of his wife's car and shot himself.
Joseph Maxwell, the owner of the cottage Purdy rented, attempted to revive Purdy until police arrived at 10pm. Both Purdy and Boccardi were announced dead on the scene.
