By now you’ve probably heard about the class action lawsuit against Match.com, arguably the biggest online dating website in the country. However, have you heard from the users of Match.com themselves? This month a former user of the Internet personals site shared their personal story of using the website on with readers on Yahoo!.
Colleen Young was an on-again off-again member of Match.com when she was in her mid-20s in the early 2000s. After a few tries, she began to see major flaws in the way that the dating company ran their website, and after a few tries, she gave up on the site altogether filled with anger and frustration at the company's ways and policies.
The first time the young woman became suspicious of the company was when she began to receive large numbers of messages regarding potential matches in the week leading up to her subscription renewal. While a usual week would come with five to ten email messages from other subscribers, the week before her membership lapsed, she would receive up to ten emails per day – mostly from inactive accounts, fake profiles, or men who didn’t write back.
As time went on, the Match.com user found that only about ten percent of emails were not spam or inactive users, and that wading through the scams was barely worth her time. At times, she even wondered if the site’s lack of vetting wasn’t exposing her to potentially dangerous predators.
Now the woman is married – to someone she met outside of the online dating scene. Her final advice? Be wary of dating sites that increase your emails at the end of your billing cycle and be very wary of anyone you talk to online on Match.com.
