Posted on Jul 12, 2011

A boating accident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 10th resulting in the death of four individuals and injuring two others. As reported by the LoHud.com, "'It is one of the worst, if not the worst (accident) that we have investigated in a long time, ' sheriff's Lt. John Watterson said. It was a horrible accident."

Killed in the accident Jay Bins, 41, Deena Cordero, 26, John Uvino, 26 and Robert Macarther, 27. The accident happened approximately 10-15 yards from the shore of the Dutchess- Columbia county line. Jessica Hotaling, 27 and Joseph Vehnick 23 were injured in the accident but able to call authorities to report the incident upon making it to shore at 6:25 a.m. Both survivors of the accident were seriously injured and taken to separate hospitals where Hotaling was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon. The condition of Vehnick was unavailable at the time of the report.

The accident remains under investigation, however there is speculation that alcohol and reckless operation may have played a role in the crash. The 19-foot 1999 Chris Craft boat the victims were aboard crashed into concrete footing at which time Bins was ejected from the boat. Uvino was reported to be found in the water while the remaining three decedents were found by dive teams responding to the accident.

Autopsies were performed Sunday afternoon, however toxicology results will not be available for approximately three to four more weeks. It is believed blunt trauma, drowning or a combination of the two are the cause of death for the victims.

Despite the horrific nature of this crash, it was not the worst accident seen in recent years. As reports by LoHud.com, an October 2, 2005 accident capsized a sightseeing boat killing 20 senior citizens on Lake George. Even so, Capt. Paul Kesik who arrived on the scene to assist authorities said, "I've been doing this for 20 years. This was a bad one."
