How Strict Are Today's Texting and Cell Phone Laws?

In today's modern world of technology it is rarely unusual to see people of all ages with a cell phone connected to their hip or their ear in all kinds of public locations. When those same people get behind the wheel, most are either adamantly obeying cell phone laws and the rest continue with their communication habits no matter where they are.

Texting and driving or talking and driving have been shown to equal the same thing to motor vehicle operators - distracted driving. By not focusing on the road, texters and talkers are putting themselves at risk as well as everyone on the road around them. Distracted driving accidents have been on the rise and can be even more dangerous than drunk driving because more and more people are doing it while behind the wheel.

Enforcing the laws surrounding distracted driving from texting/talking has proven to be difficult even for the most experienced law enforcement teams. It is difficult to really know how strict laws will be enforced because it is dependent on where you are driving. Some police departments are very strict with enforcing the laws and will issues thousands of tickets to distracted drivers but other teams are not able to spot every single person handling a phone behind the wheel.

Drivers need to put forth the effort to obey distracted driving laws especially because their own lives are in danger. There have been an increased amount of accidents, many involving teen drivers, who were fatally injured while texting and driving. Additionally, there have been many innocent people maimed or killed due to another driver's negligence.

It is not possible to know how strict distracted driving laws will be in the future but what is important in the present is to know the laws in your area and state. Drivers also have the responsibility to avoid texting and talking when behind the wheel or face the consequences that may result.
