A Marine visiting New York City for Fleet Week was struck and killed by a car in Manhattan early on Thursday morning. The man, 22-year-old Marine Cpl. Steven Jorgenson of Missoula, Montana, was dressed in full uniform and getting out of a taxi along with several other Marines at the time of the NY pedestrian accident.
The accident took place at the intersection of the West Side Highway and 49th Street at one in the morning as the Marines were returning to their ship, the USS Iowa Jima. The driver of the Acura that struck Jorgenson, a 39-year-old man from the Bronx, called 911 and stayed at the scene of the fatal pedestrian accident. The driver is cooperating with police, who do not believe that charges will be filed in relation to the accident.
After the deadly accident, officials released a statement reminding both marines and New York City residents to be cautious during the remainder of Fleet Week and to keep Jorgenson and his family in their thoughts and prayers.
The Marine’s father told news sources that it was a strange tragedy that his son survived tours in Afghanistan but was killed on New York City streets during a week of celebration.
