Dump Truck Accident Injures 17 On New York Sate Thruway

Posted on Apr 12, 2010

New York Sate Police reported that a dump truck accident on the New York State Thruway near Manchester resulted in 17 different injuries, some life threatening.

According to authorities, dump truck driver 39-year-old John Hoey was working in a construction area alongside the Thruway at 5 am on Thursday morning when he attempted to drive under the County Road 7 overpass with a raised truck box. The trailer broke off from the cab of the dump truck and flew into the eastbound lanes of the highway, where two different cars struck the object.

A minivan driven by 47-year-old Max Itzkowitz of Brooklyn was the first vehicle to crash into the dump truck box –  though Izkowitz saw the box and tried to avoid it, he struck the object. The van was carrying two adults and eight children. Next, an SUV driven by 31-year-old Yosef Compton struck the dump truck box – the SUV was carrying three adults and four children.

Two of the children from the minivan were airlifted to a nearby New York hospital. The remaining 15 truck accident injury victims were transported to hospitals by ambulance. The dump truck driver was not injured in the truck crash.

Hoey has been cited for not operating the proper equipment at a construction site – New York State law requires all dump trucks to have internal dashboard lights that warn a driver if their truck bed is raised. Hoey will pay up to $150 in fines for his violation.
