Driving Tips To Keep Teens Safe This Summer

Posted on Jul 19, 2011

The long hot months of summer are a great opportunity for friends and family to spend some much deserved quality time together. With many households scheduling summer vacations around the break from school, summer months are filled with lazy days and late nights. While this may be a great time to reconnect with loved ones you do not see as often as you would like throughout the year, it is also a time of increased automobile accidents for teen drivers; some of which are fatal. To help teens prevent car accidents, parents and guardians are encouraged to share the following tips.

Dress Appropriately

Years of experience teaches drivers that functional clothing is an importance aspect of driver safety. New drivers may not understand the importance of good footwear and clothing that allows free range of movement. Teen drivers should skip flip flops and other shoes that may fall off or otherwise inhibit safe driving. Sunglasses are a must to ensure drivers can see clearly on bright summer days.

Traffic Laws

All drivers must obey posted speed limits and other traffic laws. Failure to do so can result in accidents which may result in injury or even death. Younger drivers must not only know the laws but also the importance of following them...for everyone's safety.

Avoid Dangerous Situations

Inexperienced drivers are most at risk when operating a vehicle at night, under the influence of alcohol or drugs and during inclement weather. Whenever possible youth drivers should be accompanied by an adult when driving in bad weather or at night. This will allow the teen driver to gain experience while under the guidance of a more experienced driver.

Sadly, each year, hundreds of teens lose their lives in automobile accidents. Behind the wheel of a car, teen drivers must consider the consequences of their actions to prevent injury to themselves, their passengers and other motorists on the highway.
