Dozens of Trucks Stuck Under Bridges on the Westchester Parkway Each Year

Posted on Dec 21, 2011

Each year, several dozen tractor trailers get wedged under Westchester Parkway bridges.  In 2008, 46 trucks got wedged, 54 trucks in 2009 and 33 trucks last year.  While the majority of these truck accidents don’t result with injuries – they do tie up other traffic and can cause damage to other cars on the road and require the services of a Westchester truck accident attorney.

Most of the truck accidents on Westchester Parkway are caused by out-of-state truck drivers unfamiliar with the bridges, many with clearance height of just 9 feet while some tractor trailer trucks are 13 feet high.

Truck accidents on Westchester Parkway have been an issue for decades, and officials are not sure how to keep the tractor trailers from traveling the parkways.

George Latimer, D-Rye, Assemblyman and member of the Transportation Committee has suggested large black-on-yellow signs on I-95, I-287, and I-685 so truck drivers would see the signs before reaching the parkways.

Transportation officials and police are also looking at more high-tech (and therefore more expensive) solutions including a digital sensor that flashes a sign or sounds an alarm when a tractor trailer passes to warn the driver of impending danger.

Reflected stickers placed on road signs in the Bronx did not reduce the number of collisions caused by trucks traveling roads they shouldn’t be on.  A task force in place to eliminate these truck accidents has plans for trying “the Wizard” near the King Street Bridge.  The Wizard will send a message to truck drivers CB channels that the bridges on the Westchester Parkway are not high enough to accommodate trucks.
