A deadly car accident on the New York State Thruway near Shodak took the lives of a mother and daughter and also shined a spotlight on an important aspect of highway safety.
New York State Police say that 35-year-old Beverly Watson, 14-year-old Faith Horsted, and 10-year-old Prince Horsted, all of Dansville, were driving on the NY Thruway on Monday evening just after 6 pm when their car had a flat tire. Instead of moving into the breakdown lane, Watson stopped the car in the driving lane where it was struck in the rear by a large pickup truck that could not stop fast enough to avoid the accident.
Both Beverly Watson and her daughter were killed in the New York car accident, though emergency workers tried to revive them at the scene of the crash. Neither were wearing seatbelts. Prince, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived the crash and was transported to Albany Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The family dog also died in the accident.
The driver of the pickup truck, 37-year-old Matthew Reilly, and his passenger, 35-year-old Sean Noble, also suffered minor injuries and were taken to Albany Memorial Hospital for treatment.
In the wake of the fatal NY highway accident, Sgt. Daniel Larkin of the New York State Police reiterated how important it is to get into a breakdown lane or onto a shoulder if you car is disabled – never to stop in a traffic lane. He also reminded those who suffer a flat tire to put on their seatbelts and hazard lights.
