On November 24, 2009 – Courtney Renee Sipes was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Main Street near her home. Several people have been hit and injured or killed in this same area of road, and even two years later, Courtney's parents work tirelessly to enact safer road conditions for the community. Most recently, Courtney's mother attended a DOT meeting to discuss possible solutions to this difficult section of road. Already, an iron fence has been installed along a portion of the sidewalk to prevent people from crossing without the crosswalk; and crosswalks have been painted at the intersection. There is discussion for either narrowing the road from four lanes to two lanes and creating specific turn lanes; or adding a median to give pedestrians more time to cross, among other potential safety improvements that should reduce the number of car accident injuries in the area.
While the driver who killed Courtney Sipes was high on heroin at the time, other children and adults have been injured by other drivers who were not under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the exact same location, which indicates the road itself is not as safe as it should be for pedestrians.
