A fall at a Brooklyn subway station that left one man with serious burns should once again remind New Yorkers of the deadly third rail of the tracks.
On September 8, a drunken argument began on a Brooklyn train headed for the Broadway Junction subway station. When the train arrived, the fight continued on the subway platform, where a crowd gathered to watch. One of the men, 44-year-old Andy Morris, took a few drunken swings at another man before an onlooker shoved him and caused him to fall onto the tracks.
While several people at the scene of the slip and fall accident jumped onto the tracks to help the man, they soon realized that they were in danger of being electrocuted. They exited the area and called 911 for help – but not before Morris touched the third rail and was electrocuted. Emergency responders got the power at the subway station turned off before climbing down to assist the injured man. He was rushed to a Staten Island hospital for immediate treatment for both his burns and his fall.
The man survived, but has serious burns on his hands that could prevent him from returning to work in the construction industry. Currently, Morris is unemployed and homeless. Morris says that he doesn’t remember any aspect of the night he was injured.
Brooklyn Police have launched an investigation into the third rail injury incident.
