Alfred Copeland was hit by a taxicab on Pondfield Road on October 10th as he was walking toward the Bronxville train station on his way to Gilford Securities where he worked. He was 85 years old. The driver of the taxicab, William O'Hara said there was a glare from the sun which made it difficult to see. He was not charged by the police in the accident, but he was involved in a 2006 car accident and recently convicted of speeding in NYC. The police sent the case to the Westchester District Attorney's Office to review. Last week, a Syracuse driver claimed the glare from the sun should qualify as a traffic emergency to excuse ordinarty negligence - but it was rejected by New York's Court of Appeals.
Copeland was taken to the South Shore Medical Center immediately after the accident, and had rib fractures, arm and vertebrae fractures. Alfred's son, Tom, said his father was doing well at first, even chatting with his family and medical staff, but his condition got worse over the week and he died on Saturday morning.
