Bronx River Crash, Woman on the Mend

Posted on Jul 21, 2011

A 24 year old Amanda Diaz is recovering after her vehicle crashed into the Bronx River after it left the Bronx River Parkway last week. After the vehicle left the roadway, it disappeared into weeds until two strangers came by to rescue to victim.

The part of the Bronx River where Diaz crashed is only a few feet deep but when Diaz went into the river, her vehicle was upside down. Diaz was still strapped into her seat belt which kept her head and shoulders underwater. If the strangers had not attempted a rescue, Diaz would not have been able to escape the car on her own.

The two strangers, Hasani Bassue and Charles Buono, witnessed the accident as it happened. If they had not stopped to help rescue the victim, there is little chance the vehicle would have been seen by others. One of Diaz's rescuers was actually the driver of a vehicle she sideswiped on the Parkway when she lost control of her vehicle, which cause the crash. Diaz was driving on the Parkway around 8:30 am when she veered into the right lane and hit a passing car. This caused her to lose control of her vehicle and crash through a guardrail. The car traveled through 50 feet of weeds and brush before landing upside down.

Diaz is still in the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx being treated for trauma to her head and neck. Doctors say her injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
