Boy Dies Crossing Street to Get on School Bus

Posted on Nov 10, 2011

As 9 year old Moshe Gruber crossed the street to catch his school bus, he was hit by a van driven by Herman Gelbman of New Square. The bus had just turned on the yellow warning lights, but traffic is not required to stop until the lights flash red.

Investigators found the Gelbman was driving in the correct lane and not speeding when the accident happened, but his vehicle will be further investigated.

Gruber saw the bus slowing down and ran right into the street in front of the van. It was not possible for Gelbman to stop in time, according to witnesses. The Westchester Medical Examiner's office determined head injuries to be cause of death, but the boy is Orthodox Jewish, which means autopsies are forbidden.
