Many questions remain after a horrific New York tour bus accident in the Bronx killed 15 people and left five others critically injured. The bus accident took place on Saturday morning on the New England Thruway near the Hutchinson River Parkway, when a bus headed from Mohegan Sun Casino to Manhattan ran off of the road where it ran into a highway sign and rolled onto its side. An investigation is underway, though there are several theories as to what exactly caused the NYC bus accident.
The bus driver, 40-year-old Oferdel Williams, claims that a tractor-trailer was passing the bus at a high rate of speed in the seconds before the accident – and that the big rig either caused the bus to serve or actually hit the side of the bus. The tractor-trailer driver, who was tracked down in the hours after the crash, denies that he clipped the bus. At the same time, several passengers on the bus said that it appeared that the bus driver was falling asleep at the wheel before the traffic accident happened. Williams said that he took a nap in the bus just hours before he began the trip.
The bus left the casino at around three in the morning and crashed a t 5:30 a.m. Some passengers said the bus driver seemed distracted, while others said he hit several rumble strips. He passed a Breathalyzer test for alcohol after the accident.
Thirty-two people were on the bus, with 15 dead and 17 injured in total. The National Transportation Safety Board will look at more evidence in coming days, including an onboard camera and the bus’ black box – both of which could shed light on the cause of the bus accident.
