Being Rear-Ended By A Commercial Truck Can Be Serious Trouble
Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of car accident in New York. In fact, the majority of drivers will get rear-ended (or rear-end someone else) at some point in their lives, and some will even be involved in multiple rear-end accidents. But while most rear-end accidents don’t lead to serious injury or even extensive property damages, there is one type of rear-end accident that can result in life-threatening injuries, long-term consequences, and even death: being struck from behind by a commercial truck.
Why are rear-end truck accidents significantly more dangerous and more deadly than other types of rear collisions? There are actually several factors. First and foremost, 18-wheelers are simply bigger and heavier than other vehicles, making the impact of a rear-end collision extremely forceful. A big rig rear end accident can send your car flying hundreds of yards and lead to serious back, neck, and spine injuries. Secondly, big rigs are higher off of the ground than other vehicles, which means that your car could become wedged underneath the truck if it strikes your car from behind – in some cases, a truck could even roll over part your vehicle. Finally, since trucks have more trouble stopping and slowing down because of their weight, a big rig is more likely to strike your vehicle at a high rate of speed, especially if you are on a highway or interstate.
• Give trucks plenty of room. Many people know to give trucks room when trucks are ahead of them or beside them, but fewer people understand that you should also give trucks behind you more room than you would a smaller vehicle. • If you need to slow down suddenly, turn on your hazard lights. If you are traveling significantly below the speed limit, for whatever reason, make sure you alert approaching drivers that you are moving slower than the flow of traffic. • Keep an eye on the road ahead of you. If you are looking ahead for hazards, slowing traffic, or car accidents, you can avoid having to slam on your brakes – something that can often cause a rear-end accident.
