New Study Finds More Death By Vehicle Than By Guns

The Drum Major Institute for Public Policy and Transportation Alternative has released the results of a recent study that highlights the danger vehicles pose to human life. The study found that one New Yorker is killed every 35 hours due to traffic accidents. That is far more human lives lost than as a result of gun violence statistics in the city.

Speed is named as the number one reason fatal crashes occur. Those behind the wheel are often involved in single-vehicle crashes or collisions with pedestrians due to their high rate of speed during the drive. When speed is a factor, vehicle accidents are often much worse as far as injuries and fatalities.

In addition to speed, many accidents are due to the increase incidents of distracted driving. Distracted drivers using cell phones, entertainment devices, and other technology also pose a risk to the safety of everyone on the road including pedestrians. Alertness and attention to the road is necessary to prevent a majority of today's accidents.

The group conducting the study has suggested that in order to improve safety in the city, it may be necessary to construct more pedestrian crosswalks and islands, provide more bicycle lanes, and implement speed bumps to help prevent fatal vehicle accidents.

Drivers also have a responsibility to obey speed laws and other traffic regulations especially during the warmer months when pedestrians are walking and riding bicycles in greater numbers throughout the city. Those outside of a vehicle also need to obey city regulations and use proper lanes and signaling when around traffic, especially during heavy drive times.
