Four Ways Match.com Deceives Its Subscribers

Our New York law firm has filed a class action lawsuit against the dating website behemoth Match.com after we received information from former customers that the online personals company uses deceptive business practices to gain new customers and to keep old customers paying for memberships. One of the most shocking things we uncovered during our research was not Match.com uses not one, not two, but four separate unfair tactics to profit from singles across the country.

How does Match.com use deceptive business practices to take advantage of their customers?

• Match.com does nothing to keep scammers off of their website. While you may think that any reasonable company would take steps to keep scammers, fake profiles, and fraudulent singles off of their dating website, Match.com does not take any significant measures to keep obviously fake profiles off of their site. Not only does this expose their paying members to potential schemes and scams, it also artificially inflates their number of “female members.”
• Match.com will trick you into renewing your membership with lies. Multiple former Match.com subscribers have reported that they receive emails about interested singles only when their membership is running out or when they have asked to stop their subscription. In these cases, members will get “winks” or emails from interested singles only to discover (after they pay for three more months of service) that the interested parties don’t really exist, no longer have profiles, or don’t respond to further inquiries.
• Match.com does not screen profiles. Even though the online dating company claims to vet new profiles and screen for obviously fraudulent members, they do no such thing. While customers assume that they will be exposed only to real, quality singles in their areas, they are actually exposed to scams, fake singles, and inflated numbers.
• Match.com lies about inactive profiles. Many singles looking to date online will choose a service based on which dating company has the most singles online in their area. Knowing this, Match.com lies about how many of their online profiles are active and how many are inactive. In some cases, they may say a profile is active even if the member has not paid for the service for months.
