Are Bedsores And Pressure Sores A Sign Of NY Nursing Home Neglect?

It is a common misconception that bedsores are a common part of growing old, living in a nursing home, or losing mobility. It is extremely important to understand that although the elder – especially those who are confined to their beds – are susceptible to bedsores, there are preventative measures and treatments that all nursing homes should implement at the first sign of the problem. If your loved one is living in a New York nursing home or adult care facility and is suffering from bed sores, talk to the management immediately and get your loved one to a doctor for evaluation.

Bedsores – which are also known as pressure sores or decubitus ulcers – often develop in elderly patients who lack mobility, although they are also found in others who are restricted to their beds and unable to easily move or shift their weight. Bedsores can appear if an area is not kept dry, if a patient is not moved every two hours, or if a patient is restrained for extended periods of time. Incontinence, age, medication, and humidity can lead to bedsore – but with today’s knowledge and medical treatments, all bedsores are easily cured if caught early and looked after with care.

If your nursing home regularly turns your loved one, regularly changes their bedpan, linens, and clothes, and keeps your loved one well fed and hydrated, pressure sores have a minimal chance of forming. If your loved one’s nursing home is negligent, pressure sores can quickly become a serious, painful, and even deadly condition. As bedsores worsen, they can be extremely prone to infections that can easily spread throughout the body.

Remember: bedsores are not an unavoidable part of nursing home living! They are almost always a sign of neglect or carelessness.
